How should I pack my donations?
Many variety stores sell strong, thick, plastic bags with carry handles and a zip. Often red, white and blue striped in design. They are usually priced between one or three dollars and are surprisingly durable. The smaller bags will fit comfortably in your suitcase. Ensure your donations are clearly labeled with the orphanage/special school’s address and phone contact. This will ensure they reach the facility if misplaced in transit.
Will weight be a problem?
Most travellers intend to shop for bargains overseas and their luggage is reasonably light on departure. Economy class passengers are allowed 20 kgs, Business class 30 kgs and First class 40 kgs. Should your donations and personal baggage exceed these limits please ask your travel agent to request extra allowance. In special circumstances airlines will sometimes be prepared to offer and extra 5 or 10 kg. Extra weight cannot be guaranteed especially during peak travel times. Carriers are not liable for loss or damage to the excess luggage uplifted.
Will Customs be a problem?
Ensure you label the donations clearly and if asked explain they are going to the orphanage or special school of your choosing. Declare any goods subject to inspection. Most importantly be honest! Avoid carrying excessive quantities of donations as Customs may feel your intentions are commercial not compassionate. In Bali we can request a special clearance however we need at least 3 months notice and you must expect some delay in clearing Customs.
Are all donations acceptable?
A broken toy is of no more use to an underprivileged child than to your own child. If you would not give it to your own child then you must think twice about why you are giving to an underprivileged child. Damaged toys can also cause injury. Clothing and toys should be washed before packing. Damaged clothing is also not suitable. If the elastic is worn out or there are holes in the item of clothing, best not to pack it. Most facilities do not have sufficient funding hence staff. The staff simply do not have time to repair damaged clothing, toys etc. Their time is fully occupied taking care of the children. Do not give soft or knitted toys which can spread bacteria and parasites in an orphanage environment. Candy is also not suggested for health reasons. Best to purchase cake, fruit jello cups or fruit for the children.
Do I give my donations directly to the children?
Generally donations are given to the Director or staff for distribution. If you would like to unpack the donations and go through them with the staff please feel free. Do not expect a huge reaction from the Director or staff. They are often humble and do not show their true feelings. In many cultures it is also bad manners to open a gift in front of the person you are receiving it from. If you would like to give the children some sweets or gifts personally please ask the Directors permission first. Ensure you have something for every child or the gift is something every child can share and enjoy. i.e.: soccer, volleyball, CD player.
Is it okay to meet the children and inspect the centre?
The centres are happy for visitors to meet the children provided you are visiting at the suggested times. The children, especially the teenagers are often shy and suspicious of strangers but it does not take long to win their trust. Many of the children can speak English and are keen to practice their skills. The children like to talk about school, sport, music and their aims in life. They will be interested to know about the country you come from and about your life. Great friendships can be made and writing to the children is encouraged. Please respect your are a visitor in their home.
Can I take photographs?
The policy re photography can vary from facility to facility. Please check with the Director or staff first before taking any photographs and ask the children for permission to take their photograph. In the past there have been cases documented where photographs of the children have been misused for illegal, sexual or commercial reasons. The children must be protected from this type of abuse. Please understand the Director’s position if photographs are not allowed.
Will I be expected to make a monetary donation?
No. Your material donations and your visit is already a great gift. However should you like to donate some money to the facility ensure you ask for a receipt.
