Scams & Corruption

It is important to know that 100% of donations to Children Of Bali go directly to helping children in Bali. Every member of our charity is a volunteer, we do not take any commissions, salaries, or administration costs away from your donations.

Before I start talking about fraudulent charities or Orphanage activities in Bali, when it comes to charities the fact is the fewer “middle-men” there are and less money being spent on advertising, the more help there is for the children. The smaller charities are often more personal and provide greater support for the kids in Bali than the larger “chain” charities.  Your $1 will go further.

On a side note, if you are travelling to Bali, Indonesia, Asia and wish to visit Orphanages or Schools to support and provide donations please also visit our FAQs section which should help answer more of the questions you may have.

Corruption In Bali

Unfortunately corruption is common in Bali, like any country where there is poverty. If you want to give donations such as stationary to children in Bali please make the effort to give it to them directly. Avoid third parties, if possible give items or gifts to the children face to face.

Scams can be used to extract money from people thinking they are donating to a home or school, but the finances / support may never reach the children but instead only fill a scammers pocket.

If you are asked for money from any charities / foundations / or Orphanages in Bali make sure the money you are donating will actually be used to help the children in Bali even if it is run by western people. Ask questions, charities and foundations can claim “costs” and could keep a large proportion of the money you donate for themselves as a “salary”, “commission”, “administration cost”, “cost of time”, or “operating costs” etc… with only a fraction of your donation going directly to helping the children.

However, it is common for charities and foundations to pay wages to their local staff.  But remember the average salary for a local worker in Bali is likely to be $100 a month (the minimum being about $50) not $1,000.

Try to avoid scenarios such as “We can provide a guided tour of Orphanages or Schools for $$$ amount” or “We can provide transported excursions to Orphanages or Schools for $$$” you will likely be paying for a service and not helping the children.

Just use common sense, most people are good natured but there are always bad apples!
