Lauren Campbell Stay At The Seeds Of Hope Children’s Home

After looking over the Children of Bali website, I was SO pleased to hear that there is initiative being taken to gather shoes for these children.

During my stay at the Seeds of Hope Children’s Home, I was blessed to have the opportunity to take each child to a local shoe store on Christmas Day 2007, so each child could pick out their own pair of shoes…that fit! In my first encounter with Sandra she had mentioned that in the home, shoes were shared. The children would leave their shoes by the door, and regardless of what size, or if the shoes were boys or girls, they were up for grabs for any age child- boy, or girl. I saw little boys racing around the courtyard playing soccer in Women’s size 9 flip-flops, or barefoot if there were no shoes left to choose from. While staying in Bali I was on Teachers’ wages, so I hadn’t much money- but I saw a need and knew it needed to be filled. I immediately contacted my brother-in-law, Scott Hofert, Co-Pastor of Watershed, (www.watershedcharlotte.com), my home church here in Charlotte, North Carolina. He mentioned the need to the members of the church, and within a day raised the funds to have a new pair of shoes on the feet of each child for Christmas Day. Going to the shoe store with those children on Christmas Day- watching their faces illuminate at the wide selection of shoes available to them was absolutely humbling. However, this was 2 years ago, and I’m sure those shoes are worn, tattered, and out-grown by now. These children are incredibly active, and deserving of the best of what this world has to offer- including a well-fitted, comfortable pair of shoes on their feet.

Here are some pictures from our day at the shoe store, Christmas 2007. Some of the pictures of the boys were taken in the van on the way back to the home from the store- you can see the excitement on their faces!

Godspeed in all you are doing for these children.
With Love,
Lauren Campbell

Lauren, your post and photos made me smile :)

I remember being a little cautious each time I left my shoes by the door when I entered th lounge area. Over a few months (having the same sized feet as most of the older boys) I lost 3 pairs of black flip-flops!!

It didn’t bother me at all as you can imagine, but was a bit disconcerting the final time, when I had nothing but my hiking boots left until I got a chance to get to the shops!

Sandals are a wonderful (useful) option when thinking about a good gift for the children’s homes. I just wanted to add that sandals of sizes between ages 7 and 17 are most needed. Unfortunately I took some for little children which were all too small on arrival.
